Staff Advisor Wanted For Computer Programming Club

The Computer Programming Club hopes to provide a community for students who are passionate about computer science. In order to launch the club, we are in search of a faculty or staff member who would like to volunteer to be a club advisor.

More Information:

Organization Description: The Computer Programming Club will provide a community for students who are passionate about computer science. Open to all students, regardless of major or academic plan, the club will be a place where students can continue to explore the fascinating and vastly important field of computer science outside of the classroom. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with each other on many fun projects in languages such as Java, Python, Javascript, HTML, and CSS throughout the year. Ranging from extensive desktop applications, such as a digital translator or a sprawling role-playing game, to enduring web applications, such as a history program or a book rating website, the opportunity for projects and collaboration at the club are endless.

What Will Be Covered: The programming languages Java, Javascript, Python, HTML, and CSS will be covered throughout the club’s meetings. Projects will be made on a weekly basis using these languages, and students without prior experience will learn the syntax of each language and how to use them. In the case of the web development portion of the club, students will also learn what Node.js is and how to use it for Javascript projects.

Vision and Goals: I want students passionate about learning and doing computer science to have the opportunity to collaborate with one another outside of the classroom setting. Students will be able to work on a number of engaging and challenging projects together throughout the year, and will gain fundamental experience seeing different approaches to problem solving. I also want students without prior experience in the field of computer science to have the opportunity to gain crucial knowledge in a variety of languages while at the club. In particular, many students do not have prior experience working with web development, so I want to introduce participants to the topic and potentially help students discover a hidden passion. Students will have the opportunity to learn about programming in Java and Python and make projects on a weekly basis for the first half of the academic year. The second half of the academic year will consist of primarily Javascript, HTML, and CSS projects and education. Some examples of projects we will be working on are a morse code translator, a text-based fishing game, a history program, a book rating website, a game rating website, a to-do list application, and a card game, among many others. My goal is to provide students with an opportunity to explore computer science together, as well as to inspire students to explore computer science throughout Bellevue College.

Benefit to Students: The club will provide a community for computer science lovers and newcomers alike to participate in at Bellevue College. Participating students will gain crucial experience developing fun and engaging projects and skills that they can bring with them throughout higher education and the workforce. Students without prior experience will gain fundamental knowledge in the languages of Java, Python, Javascript, HTML, and CSS, and all students will have the great opportunity to collaborate with others throughout the year. The greater BC community will benefit by having access to a fun and exciting club that explores the fascinating field of computer science in depth, and an outlet to pursue computer science for students not majoring in computer science. My hope is to inspire a passion for computer science within the greater BC community through the club’s emphasis on collaboration and compelling projects.

Meeting Expectations: The club will meet for one hour a week, once a week, in person or online.
