This year’s BC Japan Week (Sept. 24-30) will have several guest presenters, including two special guests. Please include them in your Fall Quarter curriculum or recommend your students attend their sessions as appropriate.
1) Robotics and AI in Healthcare: Dr. Shibata from Japan will be joining us on Sept. 26 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. He is a Guinness World Record holder for creating the “Most Therapeutic Robot.”
The robot is named “PARO” and has been used for “biofeedback therapy (BFT)” by therapists, nurses, licensed clinical social workers, and caregivers. When patients with dementia, cancer, PTSD, brain injury, Parkinson’s Disease, etc. are diagnosed with pain, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and/or agitation (violent behavior, abuse, walking about), BFT with PARO can be prescribed instead of psychotropic medications that have problems with side-effects. There are already more than 40 PAROs in use in Washington state.

2) Japan’s Game Industry: A software engineer from Nintendo of America will be talking to us about Japan’s influence on the computer game industry on Sept. 29 from 2:30-3:30pm. He will explore how Japanese influencers have had an impact on the game industry over time, along with short videos of the games they helped create.
