Knowing It Exists Is Not Enough: Peace Is Possible in a World Without Nuclear Weapons
Bellevue College invites you to a powerful event that reminds us of the enduring impact of nuclear weapons and the importance of peace. Join us on Monday, Nov. 18, 2024, from 11 AM to 3 PM for the Hiroshima Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Exhibit. This exhibit, held on the 3rd floor of the U Building in the Ballroom, will feature powerful exhibition panels from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, offering an educational and moving experience.
Why Hiroshima and Nagasaki Matter
The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 remain some of the most devastating events in modern history. When the United States dropped atomic bombs on these two Japanese cities, the immediate impact was catastrophic: tens of thousands lost their lives instantly, with countless more suffering the long-term effects of radiation. Hiroshima and Nagasaki symbolize not only the destruction wrought by nuclear weapons but also the profound resilience of their survivors, known as hibakusha, who have become advocates for peace and nuclear disarmament.
These two cities have become powerful symbols in the global movement against nuclear arms, and their history continues to serve as a stark reminder of the need for a world without nuclear weapons. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and other organizations have dedicated themselves to educating the world about the catastrophic effects of nuclear warfare and the hope for a peaceful future.
About the Exhibit
The Hiroshima Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Exhibit offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from materials curated by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Through a series of exhibition panels, attendees will gain insight into the history, science, and human impact of the atomic bombings. The exhibit aims to deepen our understanding of the dangers of nuclear weapons and to inspire us to work toward a world where such weapons no longer exist.
Join Us for a Day of Reflection and Learning
This exhibit reminds us that knowing the history and risks of nuclear arms is only the first step; actively advocating for peace and disarmament is equally essential. Take this opportunity to engage with a historical moment that has shaped global policy, security, and ethics for decades. Whether you’re familiar with this history or learning about it for the first time, this exhibit will provide meaningful insights and inspire action for a peaceful future.
We look forward to seeing you at the Hiroshima Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Exhibit on Nov. 18. Together, let’s explore the possibilities for a world without nuclear weapons.
