State Names – A Quick Guide

Here are a few easy tips for using state names clearly and correctly:

Spell Out State Names

In most cases, spell out the full state name in the main text.

  • Example: She recently moved to Washington.

Clarify “Washington” When Needed

To avoid confusion with Washington, D.C., use “state of Washington” or “Washington state” when you need to specify.

  • Example: The company operates throughout Washington state.

Use Abbreviations Only for Addresses

Only use the two-letter postal code abbreviation (like WA) when it’s part of a mailing address.

  • Example: Bellevue College, 3000 Landerholm Cir SE, Bellevue, WA 98007

Following these guidelines helps keep your writing accurate and easy to read!
