Academic Degrees: A Quick Guide

When it comes to writing about degrees and certificates, getting the apostrophes and capitalization right is key. Here’s a straightforward guide to Bellevue College’s standards to keep your writing polished and consistent.

Apostrophes in Academic Degrees

  1. Use Apostrophes for Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees
  1. These terms require an apostrophe to show possession because they imply “degree of a bachelor” or “degree of a master.”
  1. Correct: She earned a bachelor’s degree in education.
  1. Correct: He is completing a master’s degree in business administration.
  1. No Apostrophe for Associate Degree

The term “associate degree” is a general reference and does not require an apostrophe.

  1. Correct: She’s pursuing an associate degree in computer science.
  1. Correct (plural): The college awarded 50 associate degrees this year.

Capitalization Rules

  1. Capitalize Full Degree Names

When writing the full name of an academic degree, capitalize it. This includes both the degree type and the subject area.

  1. Correct: He earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies.
  1. Correct: She is pursuing a Master of Arts in French Literature.
  1. Lowercase General References

When making a general reference to a degree, keep it lowercase, even if the subject area is mentioned (unless it’s a language, which is always capitalized).

  1. Correct: He’s working on his bachelor’s degree in history.
  1. Correct: She plans to finish her associate degree in Spanish next year.
  1. Certificates in Prose

Terms like “certificate of accomplishment” are lowercase unless they include the subject area.

  1. Correct: She completed a certificate of accomplishment.
  1. Correct: He earned a Certificate of Achievement in digital marketing.
