The 8th Annual Japan Week is Coming

The BC Japanese Culture Exchange Club presents Japan Week Sept. 30 – Oct. 5.

Japan Week Schedule: Sept. 30 – Oct. 5

Join us for an exciting week of cultural activities celebrating Japanese art, history, and entertainment! All sessions take place from 2:30–3:20 p.m. in Room D-106, unless otherwise noted.

Sept. 30 (Mon)
Sushi Making Workshop
Learn how to make rolled and cone sushi from a professional sushi chef. The workshop covers vegan and non-vegan sushi options (without raw fish).

Oct. 1 (Tues)
Gundam and Gunpla
Celebrate the 45th anniversary of Gundam! Discover the world of Gunpla, the popular plastic model kits. The first 20 participants will receive a free Gunpla model kit.

Oct. 2 (Wed)
The WWII Forced Incarceration of Japanese/Japanese Americans and Its Legacy
Guest speaker Dr. Larry Matsuda, born in the Minidoka concentration camp, shares his poems and narratives. This session is also available via Zoom. Visit the Japan Week website for more details.

Oct. 3 (Thurs)
Manga Drawing Workshop
Manga artist Arisa Nakamura will teach the basics of manga drawing, character design, and coloring techniques.

Oct. 4 (Fri)
Festival Setup Day
No formal sessions, as we prepare for the all-day festival on Saturday.

Oct. 5 (Sat), 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Japan Week Festival
Enjoy a full day of events, including:

  • 1954 Original Godzilla Movie Screening
  • Japanese music and dance performances
  • Calligraphy, origami, flower arrangement, and more
  • Flea market, manga swap, martial arts demonstrations
  • Karaoke, tea ceremony, yukata photo booth, and GO games
  • Shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and Taiko drumming performances
  • Special guests: Godzilla and Hello Kitty for photos!
