Jane Elliott will speak virtually today, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Educator Jane Elliott has spent the last 50 years fighting racism. Jane Elliott is known for her “blue-eyed, brown-eyed” exercise, where she ran her class as though the brown-eyed children were superior to children with blue eyes and vice versa. Jane will speak on “There is only one race: the human race” and how educators can effectively address racism.

Jane Elliott, an internationally known teacher, lecturer, diversity trainer, and recipient of the National Mental Health Association Award for Excellence in Education, expose prejudice and bigotry for what it is, an irrational class system based upon purely arbitrary factors. And if you think this does not apply to you. . . you are in for a rude awakening. As a school teacher in the small town of Riceville, Iowa, Elliott first conducted the anti-racism exercise in her all-white third-grade classroom the day after the civil rights leader was killed. She wanted them to understand what discrimination felt like.
More than 50 years after she first tried that exercise in her classroom, Elliott, now 88, said she sees much more work left to do to change racist attitudes.
“It’s happening every day in this country right now,” she said in an interview with Morning Edition. “We are repeating the blue-eyed/brown-eyed exercise on a daily basis.”
